What are you
going to do with the rest of your own life?
Waiting for one of the brilliant young leaders I mentor to come by for some more mentoring moments. This good man is on the grow in all 8 dimensions of his life. Today we are not sitting in my home office, as he has agreed to do my walk/run time with me today. At my speed, he will make it just fine. :-)
Reflecting on the magnificence of the past 7 days, being in the mountains with Judy; refreshing/reviving a friendship with another remarkable leader here in CO; continuing the individual mentoring with those I’ve the sacred privilege of mentoring (a FaceTime mentoring moment with a young businessman in another state was one of our best conversations to date); doing some writing, pondering long and hard about the future…….this week has been one of the best so far in 2015. For all that I am deeply grateful.
In aging, for any of us, how we count our days and years is, well, interesting. I now say I am 73. That’s true, since last Friday. But the better news is that I am now living into my 74th year. No problem (except for those of you who are uncomfortable with your age…). Yes…I am 73, plus I’ve already lived 10 days of my 74th year.
Coming off of this last week I am more thanks-filled than ever to be that olde. I am not afraid of being older, nor am I afraid of dying. I am committed to being as fully alive as possible until I breathe no more…in all of the 8 dimensions of life. There is so much more to learn and experience.
Life is not perfect. There are places for which I long to experience a difference. There are parts of my life that need extra careful attention, that is my responsibility…no one else’s. There are places in my existence where careful nurturing and care are necessary for continued change. Some of my commitments are being creatively realigned.
What a journey…this life of mine.
What a journey…this life of yours.
Indeed (…and thank you Mary Oliver for this oft quoted phrase…),
"What do
you plan to do
with your own one wild and precious life?"
I would enjoy hearing about that.
…and now, if you’ll excuse me, my friend just rang the doorbell, and we’ve got to get moving…walking and running…he doesn’t know about the running yet…but at my speed he will do just fine! :-)
Hello Wes, you are inspiring! I think of you often and feel like you are a friend and neighbor even though we don't live close and I haven't seen you in months, that's just how I see you. I have two of my four kids home for a few days and am enjoying being a 'mentor' to them. I have been slow to see that I have much to offer instead of too much attention on my lack. Blessings to you and Judy!
