Before 9am this morning the word/term "pilgrim" had shown up in pondering, reading, and finding a most intriguing weekend opportunity. That's not the usual word that comes up in my vocabulary...pilgrim.
Then the word was enhanced as I began to read in a birthday gift from our daughter, Consolations: The Solace, Nourishment and Underlying Meaning of Everyday Words by David Whyte. Mr. Whyte is, sincerely, one of my favorite poets. His sentences wake up parts of my brain that need awakening, and even my soul. On page 165, there's that word again, "pilgrim."
His take on the word needs to be read in full context of what he's written. However, as I do contemplate adding another number to my age, I found myself deeply moved in the stillness of this morning:
"...it might be that faith, reliability, responsibility and being true to something unspeakable are possible even if we are travelers, and that we are made better, more faithful companions, and indeed pilgrims on the astonishing, never to be repeated journey of combining the precious memory of the then with the astonishing, but taken for granted experience of now, and both with the unbelievable, and hardly possible just about to happen."
Judy and I found ourselves in an "art class" this afternoon, better to be explained next Monday, after we go on a bit of an unexpected pilgrimage this Sunday up here in Breckenridge. We are intrigued with what the outcome will be.
Here we are taking a first "step" for Sunday's journey.
If you know anything about the Camino de Santiago Pilgrimage, especially depicted so well in the movie, The Way, then you may know what we are painting as we get ready for Sunday. :-)
