...it's not moving. What is it?
When I proposed to my bride, way back in 1965, in my youth-filled arrogance I told her, "Marry me, and I promise you never a dull day!" Some days she asks, "Is this one of those days?" :-)
Probably too often I've lived up to that "promise." Today I wondered what I had found in the middle of Cherry Creek...and for some crazy reason thought of that statement I had made to her way back then.
As the better weather takes place here in Colorado, I love getting up and beginning the morning walk as close to 5:30am as possible. Gotta get in those 10,000 step in early!
In fact, those I mentor from here in the Front Range all know that at least one summer morning they need to meet me and be willing to take one of those early morning walks. They are groaning when we begin...but with the walk and talk we get to do, they are all glad "ye olde leadership coach/mentor/friend/confident" invited them along. For the locals, this is a "must."
So, today, one of the truly exceptional leaders I mentor and I were keeping up an excellent pace, deep in talk on issues in his life, when crossing the foot/bike bridge across Cherry Creek. I stopped dead in my tracks, looking north, on a sandbar island was a form that was not supposed to be there. Whoa! Dead animal? Not moving. MMmmmmmmm...........
To the north of us there is a llama farm, and it almost looked like one of those animals laying on its side. I yelled...no movement. So, I called 911.
Telling the lady this was not an emergency, I told her what I was seeing, and that this might be her goofiest call of the day. She knew the exact spot since she lived close by.
So a short while later, and afew hundred yards up the trail, a police car was making its way down the wide bike trial. We stopped, and I told him I had made the call. Very nice officer (Parker is unusually blessed with the finest of police and fireman...amazing men and women!) who heard my account, said thank you and drove on.
Well, my friend and I continued walking and sharing life. At a halfway point we turned around to head back to our home. Crossing under the Main Street bridge, all of a sudden we found the officer making a trail toward us. He said that from the bridge he had seen us and wanted us to know what he found.
Fortunately we all had a good laugh. And it was great of him to come and let us know that what he found was a big stuffed shaggy sheep dog toy...soaking wet...laying on it's side...looking, indeed, like a dead and bloated animal. As you can see in the above picture, he hauled it up to the trail trash can. Mystery solved.
Hang out with the Wes for early morning mentoring moments, one never knows what will get observed or talked over. The talk with this good man was rich and deep, including the good laugh over our discovery.
Others I'm mentoring are scheduled throughout the summer for the 5:30am "walk and talk mentoring adventure." Not to be missed. As with each step we take, life unfolds for all of us...are we ready for what we find around the bends of our paths? I hope so.
...and come take a walk with me some time. 5:30am. But only if you long to be on the grow in all 8 dimensions of your own life.......
