Living the Story/Counting the Days…10,327 to go
June 6, 2009
67 years ago yesterday, June 5, 1942, at about 7:30 PM, if the story has been told (and remembered) accurately, I breathed my first breath as a boy born to Hulda Martha Papenfus Roberts and Harold Lester Roberts. That first taking in of air, I'm presuming, was followed by a cry for life, of sorts, and was first heard at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene, Oregon.
From that day to this, I've lived (thanks to the wired insight of a data calculator)…
…24,473 days
…3,496 weeks
…587,328 hours
…35,239,680 minutes
…2,14,380,800 seconds
…making up the past moments of my life. Imagine that!
Yesterday, one of my finest of friends, took me to breakfast. This God-given-gift of a friend and brother and I share much…challenge each other often and deeply…have each other's back…and he cannot understand for the life of him why I would want to live to be 95!
Since even a brief familiarity with the Bible brings one to recognize that it is God who says our days are numbered…and since there is the implication that he alone knows the number of our days…I know that tomorrow my number could be called. But…should I experience the grace and health and sound mind to live to be 95, this is what the numbers would look like from this day…6 Ju ''9…
…10,327 days yet to live
…1461 weeks
…245,448 hours
…14,726,880 minutes
…833,612,800 seconds
…thus, looking at all these numbers, and wondering if my life-wish will be granted before I take my last breath, I've lived just about 2/3s of my life (…more on the 'Three Thirds of Life' on another day…).
It's been a different day than expected, this first day of my 68th year (…more on that, later, as well). But it's been a good day with Judy…reflecting on so much of the first 2/3s…pondering the future…and then being brought back to the current moment. Today, from three different versions of the Bible, this wisdom and encouragement from the Psalms has often floated through the fibers of my mind:
Psalm 90:12…….
…from the New International Version:
Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
…from The Message:
Oh! Teach us to live well! Teach us to live wisely and well!
…from the New King James Version
So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
And thus begins an occasional journal of the rest of my days. Some of these thoughts will be posted on my blog. Other writings, in between the blog posts, will also be sent to many friends, new and olde, where there are continuing, developing relationships. When you see the words…
Living the Story/Counting the Days
…you will know another chapter will have been written. There is a sacred sense gathering in my soul that it's going to be quite a journey. Welcome. I'm thankful you just may be on it with me…no matter the duration.
Happy Birthday.
I celebrated by following my mentor to the ER. I hit my extremely tall head on the short garage door (it's handle to be precise) and was awarded with 9 staples.
I hope you are healing.
Sending up prayers for you on your 67th.

Happy birthday, a few days late and from many years ago. I have become an often visitor to our blog and it has been an encouragement to me in a variety of ways. Odd to think of the reconnection in this way after all these miles.
