This AM (18 Oct '5) on the way to a monthly book club of men...I called a good friend concerning a trip he was embarking on today. Twelve hours later, finally heading for home, I called him again, to see how he was doing way across the US of A because we are committed to keep track of each other in righteous ways as brothers.
The friend I called is one of the most courageous men I know...besides being a very good friend. This past weekend at a men's retreat he shared some of his story that moved us all. Sincerely, we were moved to tears that brought some needed transformation and encouragement to all our souls. I love this guy, and will stand with him anywhere...any time.
As we discussed Dietrich Bonhoeffer's "Life Together" in our book group early this AM at the fairly new Highland's Ranch Tattered Cover Book Store, my mind kept drifting back to this weekend and my friend's courageous and "real time" words. A transformed life telling the truth about redemption in their own journey is a powerful tool of the Spirit of our God. I could not have been more thankful for, nor more proud of this good man who shared some his life journey on Saturday AM.
I wonder what it must have been like to be in a prison camp with Bonhoeffer? Only 39 when he died...he left a significant legacy of thought...of words...concerning his own journey that also impact us today. A sentence from our gathering of men this morning has stayed with me all day as I've reviewed some of Bonhoeffer's words, between today's appointments...
When God calls a man, he bids him come and die.
...........come and die. Are we really willing to follow Jesus...no matter the cost? Bonhoeffer did. So did my friend this past weekend. I honor them both...and thank God for each man.
Oh that we would all allow those words to soak in - When God calls a man, he bids him come and die. What beauty in such a simple Truth.
I am glad you are home.
